The construction of the Ice House on the banks of the Neva in 1740 was linked to the mock wedding of Prince M.A. Golitsyn—a court jester to Empress Anna Ioannovna—and a Kalmyk woman named Buzheninova.
The house was built from slabs of pure ice, which were stacked upon one another and bonded with water. All the interior furnishings and decorations were likewise crafted from ice. Physics professor G.W. Kraft regarded the Ice House as a useful discovery in the field of the natural sciences.
