“To be continued…” Story
For the Imperial Porcelain Factory 275- year anniversary
The exhibition presents more than 1000 porcelain pieces of applied art dated 18 th century that come from the collections of the State Museum of History of St. Petersburg and of the Imperial Porcelain Factory. Many of them are revealed to public for the first time ever. In addition, some new items specially made for this project that is dedicated to the anniversary of the company will be presented.
The production of Russian porcelain started in 1744 In St Petersburg, when Porcelain Manufactory was organized by the decree of Empress Elizabeth. At the exhibition you will see the first production items that were used as diplomatic gifts as well as recreated porcelain pieces from the first "Sobstvenij (Own)" service of the Empress Elizabeth.
The ruling time of Catherine II became the heyday of porcelain production in Russia in the XVIII century. Special pride of the company at that time was several big services as "Arabesque", "Cabinet" and "Yakhtinsky". Some of them are presented at the exhibition. You can see also some sculptural portraits of the Empress by French sculptor J. D. Rashette, who for 25 years had been working as a chief model master of the factory.
The next period is marked with a new tradition of Easter and Christmas production manufacturing. Some of the royal Easter eggs are on display.
The history of Factory in the 19th century is represented by different items of applied art as well as services for royal residences and yachts.
The special section is devoted to the porcelain of the soviet era. From the propaganda of the 20-30-es through the well-known war time “Cobalt net” design to various small porcelain sculptures of the second half of the 20th century.
Today 24 artists of the Imperial Porcelain Factory produce new samples for sale, and at the same time they create original pieces of applied art setting the vector for further development of porcelain art.
