from 27 September 2016 to 4 December 2016
Photographs by Jean-Christophe Ballot
Peter and Paul Fortress, Grand Ducal Burial Chapel
The exhibition of French photographer Jean-Christophe Ballot is dedicated to the burial site of the French kings – Basilica Saint Denis in Paris. The series of feature photographs represents the tomb sculptures of the basilica.
In total 50 black and white photos are shown. These are panoramic pictures of the interior of the cathedral with the tombs and enlarged fragments of tombstones. In his works, the photographer often focuses on the details: faces, gesture, accessories, symbolic figures of animals at the feet of the deceased (dogs, lions), etc., and is experimenting with the play of light and shadow.
