Staraya (Old) Ladoga. Ancient capital of Northern Rus

A collaborative exhibition of the State Museum of the History of St Petersburg and Museum of the Archeology of Staraya (Old) Ladoga is dedicated to the celebration of the anniversary - 1150 years of Russian Statehood Foundation. It brought together archaeological findings and contemporary photographs of Staraya (Old) Ladoga, made by a professional photographer Mikhail Udalov and students of children's photo studio “Ladoga” (Novaya Ladoga).
For first time Ladoga was mentioned in chronicles in the IX century. In 862 Prince Rurik invited by local people came there to restore order between warring tribes. According to the “Tale of Bygone Years” Rurik brought Ladoga down. Ladoga became the first capital of ancient Rus.
The exhibition presents about two hundred archaeological findings related to the Old Russia times and the early Middle Ages, from the collection of the Museum of the Archeology of Staraya (Old) Ladoga. Among them are combs, buckles, seals and jewelry made of glass, as well as bronze, silver, copper and other metals, a cross made of amber, keys, fragments of weapons and household items: spoons, vessels, pottery.
Modern life of Staraya (Old) Ladoga was reflected in the works of members of the Russian Union of Art Photographers and head of the Novoladozhsky Genealogical Society Mikhail Udalov and students of children's photo studio “Ladoga” (teacher - Tatyana Churova). The photos at the exhibition depict the famous monuments of Staraya (Old) Ladoga: fortress, St George Cathedral, the Church of St. John the Baptist, Nikolsky and Uspensky monasteries – and quiet, leisurely life of a small provincial town.
