The 18th International Carillon Festival "Music above the city"

This year The International Carillon Festival “Music above the city” is being held for the 18 th time in a row since 2001 when this musical instrument was installed on the belfry of St Peter and Paul Cathedral. The first carillon of 35 bells was bought by Peter the Great in the Netherlands. It was destroyed during the storm in 1756. The second carillon was installed in 1776 and was in use till 1840 when it was finally demolished. The modern carillon was presented to our city by the government of Flanders and more than 350 private donators. It was created under the supervision of the director of Royal Carillon School "Jef Denyn" in Mechelen Jo Haasen and with support of State Museum of History of St Petersburg. It consists of 51 bells and weights more than 15.160 kg. Its sound comprises four octaves. The biggest bell weights 3.075 kg, the smallest- 10 kg.
The carillon festival 2019 hosts well-known musicians from Australia, Belgium, Ireland and Russia as well as students and alumni of the Carillon, Pipe organ and Harpsichord Faculty of St Petersburg State University. The wide range of different musical styles from classics to folklore will be performed during this time in the heart of the city.
