Elena Khmelevskaya. A few drawings.
from 7 June 2012 to 15 August 2012
The exhibition features watercolor and colored pencil paintings by Elena Khmelevskaya – a St. Petersburg artist and student of Mikhail Matyushin.
From 1922 to 1926 Elena Khmelevskaya studied at Painting Department at the Academy of Arts and worked in the workshop of spatial realism under the guidance of prof. Mikhail Matyushin. In 1930 together with students of Mikhail Matyushin she participated in the exhibition under the motto KORN (extended surveillance team) at the Leningrad Central House of Workers of Art. She participated in the studies which formed the basis of the “Color reference book” (1932). Since 1934 she had been working in a group engaged in revitalizing the colors of Leningrad under the direction of Maria Ender. The main task of the group was to design and supervise the decoration of building facades. After the war and until 1964 she headed this group. She was directly involved in the creation of the “color face” of the city. Elena Khmelevskaya is one of the authors of the idea of an integrated color scheme of the facades of buildings along highways (squares, streets). This idea was first carried out in Leningrad under her guidance. Elena Khmelevskaya has written books on interior and exterior building facades color. She is the author of several color toning books and a unique “Сolor manual for architects and builders” (1967). She taught chromatics at secondary and higher educational institutions.
The exhibition features over 20 watercolor and colored pencil works from a private collection.
