Second birth of the Cathedral
An exhibition of icons painted by iconographers from icon-painting workshop of Saint Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian specially for the iconostasis of the Cathedral of the Icon of Our Lady Feodorovskaya in St. Petersburg.
The Cathedral of the Icon of Our Lady Feodorovskaya is located in the historic center of St. Petersburg near Moscow railway station. Its construction was timed to the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty (1913) and it became known as the “Romanov church”.
The Icon of Our Lady Feodorovskaya was a family relic of the Imperial House since 1613, when nun Martha has blessed with it the newly chosen king from the ancient boyar family of Romanov - her son Mikhail.
The solemn ceremony of laying of the foundation-stone of the Cathedral took place in 1907. The best architects and iconographers participated in its creation. On 15 January, 1914 Metropolitan Vladimir (Epiphany) consecrated the Cathedral.
In 1932 the Cathedral was closed and the abandoned building was occupied by a milk plant.
In 1993 it was decided to hand the memorial church over to the Russian Orthodox Church. Nowadays the Cathedral is being restored.
The exhibition in the Rumyantsev Mansion will present 22 icons by iconographers from icon-painting workshop of Saint Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian.
After the exhibition the displayed icons will take their places in the iconostasis of the Cathedral of the Icon of Our Lady Feodorovskaya.
