The victory of Russia over Napoleonic France in the Patriotic War of 1812 is one of the most dramatic events of Russian military history, which became the subject of many works of art. A number architectural and sculptural monuments was created in St. Petersburg to commemorate the glorious victories of the Russian army: the Kazan Cathedral and the Alexander Column, Narva Triumphal Gate and the Arch of the General Staff, the monuments to Mikhail Kutuzov and Michael Barclay de Tolly, etc.
Paintings, drawings, works of decorative art of the XIX-XX centuries depict these famous monuments in different historical periods.
The exhibition also reminds about the unknown or lost monuments of the War of 1812 in St. Petersburg. Among them are such as the monument to Leonty Korennoy – a soldier of the Life Guards of Finnish regiment, hero of the battle of Borodino and the “Battle of Nations” at Leipzig . The monument was raised in the early XX century in the building of the Officers' Assembly on Vasilievsky Island, later it was transferred to the courtyard of the Suvorov Museum where today only its pedestal can be seen.
